Music Ministry

The music ministry plays a vital role in the life of the parish at St. John’s. A good way to participate in the Liturgy is through our music program. St. John’s choirs are open to anyone who wants to join and there are no auditions. You do not need to read music to participate or have had any previous choral experience. Simply a willingness to sing is required. Contact Chuck Peters, Director of Music, for more information:

Parish Choir

September-June, 10:00 a.m. Mass
The Parish Choir provides musical leadership during Sunday morning worship, as well as major Solemnities and Feast Days. We are a diverse and friendly community of volunteer musicians. No experience is necessary, but regular attendance at rehearsals is essential. The choir provides a great opportunity to develop vocal and musical skills, and to sing great works of sacred choral literature of all styles and periods.

Membership is open to all singers, high school age and up, with younger singers considered on an individual basis.

Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the St. Catherine room.

Youth Choir

First Sundays, October-May
The Youth choir includes all students in the Religious Education classes, and leads the Sunday 10:00 a.m. Mass on the first Sunday of each month. This choir also sings at the 5:00 p.m. Family Mass on Christmas Eve.

Rehearsals are conducted during Religious Education on Sunday mornings. Attendance in St. John’s Religious Education program is not required. If you are not in the program but would like to sing, contact the Director of Music for rehearsal times.

St. Cecilia Funeral Choir

The St. Cecilia choir performs a valuable service to the parish community by singing at funeral liturgies. Members of this choir enjoy flexible scheduling and are generally available on short notice. There is usually a 2-3 day notice of an upcoming funeral or memorial service.

Rehearsals are usually prior to the funeral.

Cantors

Our talented volunteer parish cantors lead us in prayer and song. They are a generous and dedicated group of musicians who give of their time to minister in this special way.

Anyone wishing to be a cantor should possess basic music reading skills and a pleasant voice. Cantors are provided with musical resources and training.

Rehearsals are prior to the Wednesday Parish Choir rehearsals, and/or one hour before the Mass at which the cantor is scheduled to lead.

Instrumental Solos and Ensembles

Instrumentalists are always welcome, and usually accompany the singing for special occasions.

Soloists should check with the Director of Music about the possibility of playing at Mass, for weddings, or other occasions.

Instrumental ensembles play at various special Masses throughout the year. Some examples are:

Advent (String ensemble)
Christmas Eve Family Mass (Band)
Christmas Eve Midnight Mass (Brass ensemble)
Epiphany (Band)
Easter (Brass ensemble)
Pentecost (Brass ensemble)
Mother’s Day (Wind quintet)
July 4 (Band)
Assumption (String ensemble)
Christ the King (Brass ensemble)

The annual schedule of rehearsals and performances is posted outside the Music Office, and is available from the Director of Music.
